En nuestra sociedad, el hablar idiomas es cada vez más importante. Como padres, queremos dar a nuestros hijos la mejor oportunidad de aprender otros idiomas, pero la decisión no siempre es fácil. ¿Cuál es la mejor manera de que mi hijo/a aprenda otro idioma?, ¿Es mejor llevar a mi hijo/a a un colegio bilingüe o le podría resultar más complicado estudiar en dos idiomas a la vez?, ¿A qué edad debe empezar a aprender otro idioma?. Se acumulan los interrogantes y a veces, por no tener las respuestas, decidimos mantenernos en un modelo monolingüe.
In our society, speaking different languages is increasingly important. As parents, we want to give our children the best opportunity to learn other languages, but the decision is not always easy. Los cerebros de los niños hasta los 8 años son especialmente receptivos a la adquisición de un segundo idioma. Los estudios demuestran que los niños que aprenden un segundo idioma antes de esta edad pueden llegar a hablarlo con la fluidez de un nativo, ya que hasta esa edad los cerebros, oídos y cuerdas vocales son muy flexibles.

Por eso, la mejor manera de aprender un segundo idioma a una edad temprana es a través del juego. ¿Cuándo debe empezar? La respuesta es sencilla, cuanto antes mejor. Nunca es pronto para empezar y no tiene por qué suponer un sobreesfuerzo para un niño, sino más bien al revés. Psicólogos, neurólogos y logopedas están de acuerdo en que la adquisición de un segundo idioma no tiene por qué entorpecer el aprendizaje en la lengua materna. En la mayoría de los casos, lo que hace es estimular el desarrollo del lenguaje, y los niños son capaces de canalizar perfectamente los dos idiomas simultáneamente.
Therefore, the best way to learn a second language at an early age is through playing. When should they start? The answer is simple, as soon as possible. It is never too early to start and does not have to mean an extra effort for the child, but rather the inverse. Psychologists, neurologists and speech therapists agree that the acquisition of a second language does not hinder learning in the mother tongue. In most cases what it does is to stimulate the language development, and children are perfectly able to channel the two languages simultaneously.

I totally agree with you. As a Spanish immigrant in Belgium I started school in French at the age of four. I had spoken Spanish since I was born with my family at home and I don't remember having had any trouble. What is more, after a few months, I remember my parents being amazed by hearing me speaking a perfect French so soon. (It is probably the same experience you're living with your daughter!). At eight, I started learning English with a neighbour who was an English teacher. (I cut her garden grass to pay my first English classes!).
